Something is Announced by Your Life! marks a significant milestone for Lost Under Heaven. Their creative journey continues to be one of personal growth and transformation, as they confront past experiences and embrace the evolving world around them. Through their innovative artistry and captivating storytelling, the duo offers a powerful and inspiring message of hope and resilience in these turbulent times.

Across two boldly maximalist albums – the Mute-released Spiritual Songs For Lovers To Sing and follow-up Love Hates What You Become – Hoorn/Roberts partnership has seen them work with Grammy winning producer’s John Congleton (Angel Olson, St Vincent) and the Haxan Cloak (Bjork, Father John Misty, Midsommar Soundtrack) whilst pushing at the cathartic precipice of their own emotions.

Back with their prescient third album, Something is Announced by your life! , this time on their own independent imprint LUH*international, the couple’s drive is still unrelenting; their sonic world is a phantasmagoria of triumphant crescendos, soaring strings and anthemic vocals that call out to the heavens.

The poetic fire of Patti Smith and the songcraft of Nick Cave have long held sway over Lost Under Heaven’s work and there are calls to both again here – be that the psychological pugilism of the album’s stirring second track Shadow Boxing, or in the portentous near-six-minute Winter’s Truth that sees Ellery and Ebony enter into mythopoetic dialogue, as they sing “Am I the King who betrays everything? His Kingdom, His Queen, His worth?” amidst baroque strings and impressionistic drumming that later evolve into a thrilling post rock climax.

Dark Days, meanwhile, perhaps best illustrates some of the album’s broader themes of Mystical Idealism vs Pessimistic Realism. It’s Lost Under Heaven at their most frenetic, a rush through goth-tinged rock noire, with Ebony’s vocal taking centre stage as she croons “In the quiet before the storm, I fear the worst is yet to come.” The duo write as they live, like the rest of us, on the precipice of ever more turbulent times to come, the present day’s unremitting cycle of ecological, financial, and social tumult seen as merely a prelude.

However, in this track – as on the rest of the album – there is an undertone of radical hope to the songwriting, as they weave stories that embrace both the Light & the Dark . Lost Under Heaven don’t just dwell in what we already know to be true of our current times, they push forward towards a vision of the “more beautiful world we know in our hearts is possible.”

“The status quo cannot hold” Ebony explains. “It is our understanding that these times will get so hard that people will be shaken out of their patterns, distortions, and delusions. To face dark times we hold faith that out of the wounds of civilization we will collectively begin to build a regenerative system that is in harmony with the earth and serves the evolutionary journey of every soul-sovereign individual, so Remain Optimystic and cherish everyone”

On Dark Days, the scene is set for raging onslaught – and in the past Lost Under Heaven might have thrown themselves fully into angst ridden provocations. However, on Something is Announced by your life!, there’s a new found space to breathe, more time to think and contemplate the nuanced beauty & tragedy of the world around them. Lullaby (For A New Earth), for instance, unfurls gracefully, faded drones and a plaintive organ settling around Ellery and Ebony’s hushed vocals. The Return features one of the purest anthemic choruses they’ve perhaps ever written, but it comes atop a pared-down, piano-led verse that they rise out of effortlessly as opposed to fighting above a clamour.

The Return relates partially to Ellery’s return to his childhood home-town of Ramsbottom, where the couple had moved to in late 2017. Reacquainting himself with the places that as a teenager he had sought only to escape, coincided with a disruptive period of self doubt, confusion and an inner “unravelling” into a “wasteland of depressive malaise.”

However, forced to stop running and face his inner demons due to the circumstances of the pandemic, Ellery came to look upon the quiet northern mill town with new eyes. He became re-enchanted with the vast landscapes of moorland, hills and ancient woodlands that surrounded their home. During the lockdown he began to take his old notebooks and journals down to the river, reading over a lifetime of dreams, aspirations and challenges – in the process even unearthing an unfinished song he’d begun writing when he was just 17, called ‘Get Spooky’. Deciding to finally finish it as an invocation for change, It became the climatic ending for Something is Announced… and the catalyst to creating the rest of the record.

Buoyed by this reflective period of self discovery - and with the support of a Patreon community launched to help provide income during lockdown - Ellery and Ebony committed to self producing a coherent new body of work. After a summer spent jamming together at home, they started visiting Pinhole Studios in the autumn of 2020,  with their live drummer Ben Kelly, building upon recordings they’d begun at home, overdubbing additional pianos, synths and guitar parts. Vocals were then done back in their DIY home studio,  the duo tackling each song one at a time over a series of months as opposed to the furious pace of a few weeks they’d pushed themselves through the previous two albums.

“The slow, mindful and self-reliant approach to creating this record pushed us to really hone in on what we felt was uniquely ours to communicate” Ellery says. “In the past, I feel I hid my insecurities behind an intensity and a certain nihilistic bravado, I  was obsessed with the dystopian aspects of our hyper capitalist global culture but by 2020 I had come to clearly see my habitual attitudes of black pilled hopelessness had suffocated the spontaneous joy that is the beating heart of my creative process, I consciously tried to challenge this as I produced the new record, seeking to celebrate the human experience with compassionate humility”

In a curious twist, a single Bitcoin they’d received  as payment for a gig in Los Angeles in 2018 shot up in value at the end of 2020, enabling them to approach cellist Gamaliel Rendle Traynor from the London band Sweat to add string arrangements to the record, before mixing and then mastering it at Abbey Road. Their subsequent investments in the crypto industry enabled them to self-fund their independent self release and establish LUH international as a label imprint and creative studio..

In the summer of 2021 as the recording was finishing up, Ellery also became involved in digging through the archives of his first band, WU LYF, putting together a book marking ten years since the release of their cult debut LP Go Tell Fire To The Mountain. Though this undertaking didn’t directly inform Lost Under Heaven’s process - you might want to look at it as an example of the restorative effects of writing Something is Announced… - certainly it isn’t hard to believe that the creative spurt that came from facing up to one aspect of his past played a part in allowing him to finally re-visit another period of his life that, for a long time, he’d locked away. As he puts it: “I have come to relate differently to the formative events of my life, acknowledging my past and the progress I have made, all that I have become.”
