Black Sun Rising

By Ellery Roberts

Black Sun Rising

prophecy can not see the shape of the lilacs.

I want you to look to the window.
I remember when I looked out
to a sky , blue
a city view
now vague outlines of buildings
smudged like a drawing
erased.

...

today I woke to the 7th day of smog
I dreamt the heavens opened
blue cracks on a grey sky
was it a memory?
maybe a glimpse
of a forgotten future.

...

I walk to the window
vision obscure
throat dust sore

* coughs *

do you remember
the last time
you inhaled pure

...

I open the tap - water undrinkable
I open another tab - a mixture of rare earth metals and chlorine
and then it's spring , at a pool amongst the rocks
I read Daniels Book
Water lapping my feet.
I look for my reflection.
no water , only rock.
there was a drought of empathy.
even before the water wars
I close the tab, ignorance is easier
Was it ever different?

...

it's been 7 days now
or was it 7 weeks ?
It feels like 7 months
The present lost in repetition
Seven , Seven , Seven
the only number I recall
the times signal a new beginning
I remember he said all life must fall
for another world to be born

...

a memory slips
a reminder's dull Buzz
fresh blows the wind
bee's  low drones
I remember the heat on my shoulders
lying in green fields
linen flying through the air
the smell of summer rain
what will be saved
am I impure?

....

I have the feeling I am
but can't recall what I was before
I have seven hundred and seventy seven terabytes
of memories stored
of natures abundance
the times I looked out the window
to a clear summer's day
today I look out the window
to smog & acid rain

...

and now I'm bored and tired and drowning the monotony of days
I open the window - carbon monoxide
I open the window - sulphur dioxide
I open the window- and I have the feeling
that I am suffocating
thick layers of dust
ashes of prophecy

...

I’ve seen a Black Sun Rising
